Virtual Plain Air
This is my first exploration of digital matte painting for my Masters portfolio. This sketch uses the Virtual Atmosphere technique.
This is a scene I was trying to show, a huge concrete deconstruction floating in the sky, stretching into the distance. I first used a 2.5D material of a cube structure, but the size of the material was much smaller than the size of the scene. So I needed to add atmosphere to emphasize the size and depth of the cube.
For the fog in the near distance, I used a Soft Light blending layer and used a round soft edge pressure opacity brush to paint the brightest color of the background sky. For the fog in the far distance, which is relatively thicker, I created a new layer and used the normal blending mode to adjust the opacity. Finally, I used a Gaussian blur to make the fog softer.
2.5D mattes & Invisible Set Extension 1
Due to my schedule for my master's portfolio, I had limited time, which forced me to learn faster. I started learning 2.5D masking very early according to the requirements of my portfolio tutor. This is another work I explored in my portfolio creation. Emphasis on the use of 2.5D technique
This is also my Invisible Set Extension 1
My idea was to create an ecosystem of giant surreal concrete buildings, with terrain and plants covering the top of concrete cubes, waterfalls and typhoons falling from above. Birds fly between these buildings. In the distance, you can see the deconstructed concrete composition and the extended horizon.
First, I created my white model in SketchUp.
