Introduction
According to the requirements of Assignment, I will create a new art work in Task3 based on the knowledge learned in the first two tasks,The new work will continue the Goal, (LIFE on Land). At the same time, it will be inspired by the art works selected in TASK2.
I chose Life on Land as my Goal, and I decided to choose the relationship between urbanization and urban animals as my theme.To show this theme, I chose two representative animals, birds and stray cats.
Stray cats are typical products of urbanization. First of all, there will be no stray cats in the wild environment (stray cat here refers to pet cats). With human activities and urbanization, this stray cat that is different from pet cats in the family appears in the ecological environment.The second animal I chose is birds, which is different from stray cats. The life of birds in the city is forced, and the expansion of the city has caused many birds to be adapted to living in cities.The existence of these two animals will lead to contradictions, and stray cats have the instinct of hunting. Without limited to mice, stray cats also hunt birds. Most birds in the city cannot fight against stray cats. The most important point is that the hunting behavior of stray cats is not hungry, but similar to entertainment. In most cases, stray cats do not eat them after killing birds.The life of birds in the city is much more suffering than birds in the wilderness, including hardening grounds reduced food and lack of trees as shelters. The behavior of stray cats is undoubtedly the life of urban birds.
As a special product of the city, stray cats have unique population maintenance capabilities. They have strong reproduction ability and pet cats abandoned by humans will also become part of stray cats. The most important point is that stray cats have no natural enemies. Therefore, the flood of stray cats is harmful.The starting point of my creation is to let more people realize the harm of stray cats. According to the requirements, I need to draw inspiration from the art works selected in TASK1/2 to create new works.
So at the beginning, I decided to create a work with similar double exposure, the subject is animal.I found more similar works as my reference.

My idea is to create a disturbing scene to show my theme. The first sketch idea creates a bird -shaped mask, just like reference. Through mask can see a cat which is attacking.Outside the mask, a bird stood on a wall/fence. The background is the city. In the mask, a cat is about to sneak attack along a wall/fence. The corners in the mask are different, I hope to show the feeling of two different worlds.

In the first exploration, I found that the effect was not as good as I imagined. At the same time, I think the theme of this composition is not clear enough.So I started to explore new composition.In the process of exploring reference, a gray -tone work attracted my attention. I think this style is quite distinctive and meets part of the design principles (comparison, symmetry, flow, depth)
It perfectly shows the impact of urbanization on animals, and the gray style gives people a feeling of depression.I can't use it directly, I need to create my own work.So I found some similar pictures as a reference.

According to reference, I used Illustrator for passive creation. Through the pen tool for exploration, I continued to modify that I got my gray -tone background，The background is to show the scene where birds survive in the city. I added many wires and birds for decorative backgrounds .I started a new exploration based on this background（All original AI and PSD file links will be given at the end）
Before that, the cat illustration I used was drawn by Illustrator based on a photo. AI or automatic copy function is not used（All original AI and PSD file links will be given at the end）

I re -adjusted the perspective, because it was difficult to find that it was difficult for birds and cats to overlap.

I gave up the double exposure and let the birds and cats on the same layer. I changed the shape of the wall. The new composition significance is more clear, and it is more in line with the theme.
After confirming the basic composition, I started to think about how to make it better. First of all, I need to emphasize the weight of the bird in the work. I want to observers notice the bird for the first time, then the cat, and finally observe the background carefully.
After getting the shape of the bird, I copied it. I needed to achieve the effect of glowing. I need two same layers. First of all, I ca n’t really achieve the effect of HDR luminous. This is not a JXR picture, and not everyone ’s screens can display it normally.
With the feedback from Ms. YIP, I adjusted the relationship between birds and cats and increased the weight of birds. Make observers easier to pay attention to birds, and modify the typesetting of the text.
Design principles analysis
In the final work, I lit the birds because of the birds as a part of urban animals, and they rarely were concerned. In contrast, stray cats care about and feed them because many people think it is cute. This exacerbated the contradiction.I stripped the cute and simple side of the cat, aiming to emphasize the fact that cat hunting birds. I put the cat in the dark, behind the bird's back. I hope that the observer will see the attacked cat after paying attention to the bird, so that the observer feels a sense of anxiety.The gray forest in the title refers to the city. The city is not designed for animals. The living space of urban animals in the city is limited. Contradiction is inevitable,That's Struggle for Urban Sanctyaries's meaning.
In the end, I intend to use changes between dynamic range as a tool to emphasize and weaken the relationship between elements.I tried to use PS skills to make the birds glow, and the weight of the element was changed by using color adjustment.This is a skill I have long wanted to try.
First of all, I need to intercept the birds. In order to avoid selection errors caused by similar colors, I filled the birds to fill up the green first, and then used the color to find it accurately.

I choose to use HDR coloring to achieve similar effects. First of all, I need to let the background dark, so as to generate a gap in a dynamic range to highlight the brightness of the bird layer.
I first use the night effect of lut color to make the background darker. Then use the two bird layers to use Gausso, the value is 10 and 100. They are self -glory and bloom.Then use the HDR color to adjust the highlights to about 80, and the shadow part is slightly darkened, in order to highlight the glowing of the birds and the sky. In the end, I got a twilight/morning effect

Design principles analysis
Approximate Symmetry：The background building is approximately symmetrical, and the alley in the middle can be regarded as a symmetrical shaft.
Asymmetric balance：The use of asymmetric balance, through the contrast of the size, color, contrast, and brightness, guide the observer to watch the elements in a specific order.
Color contrast：I used color comparison to change the weight of the element in the screen by color. Guide the viewing order of the observer
Hierarchy：I used the perspective as a visual prompt, so that the observers first noticed the subject and then noticed the secondary object

Gestalt Completion（Principle of Proximity & Principle of Continuity）：Close the main elements and dimensions,The principle of continuity posits that humans perceive continuous patterns or lines more readily than discontinuous ones. This principle is often used in design to guide the viewer's eye along a path or flow of information.The principle of proximity suggests that elements that are close to each other are perceived as belonging together or forming a group. This principle is fundamental in design for organizing and grouping elements to convey relationships and hierarchy.
Creative Expression: Closure can be leveraged in art and design to create visually engaging compositions that encourage viewer participation and interpretation. Artists often use incomplete or suggestive forms to stimulate the viewer's imagination and evoke a sense of mystery or intrigue.

According to Ms. YIP's feedback, I need to emphasize the weight of the bird in the picture. Make sure the observer notice the bird first, and then the cat. At the same time, my title is in the middle typesetting, so that the text has more space.
